You can pre-order the incredible and aptly named debut album Old Time Guitar via Mark Harris’s Bandcamp page. Make sure to read the Tunesday Tuesday feature that Justin Hiltner wrote for The Bluegrass Situation.
My friend Mike needs our help paying for his recovery from a cerebral hemorrhage caused by an arteriovenous malformation. If you have dollars to spare, please send a bunch his way. He's one of the nicest fellows on the scene, and one of the best fiddlers I know. It's not clear yet if he'll be able to play again.
Here is a single that's a duet with Sarah Jarosz from his forthcoming album:
and here he is fiddling "Wheel Hoss" with Jacob Jolliff:
The last album I produced in Chicago before moving to Denver was Michelle Billingsley’s forthcoming debut. I met her in a blues slide guitar class at the Old Town School of Folk Music a bunch of years ago. I had no idea at the time what an amazing writer and singer she is! Read an interview with her in American Songwriter here, then dig her first music video for the album below.
I produced and played guitar on Max Allard’s single “Rooster,” premiering now at The Bluegrass Situation. Click here to listen!
Here’s a free lesson in which I teach Wade Ward’s brilliant clawhammer setting of the classic banjo tune “Shady Grove.” Tune your banjo to G modal (gDGCD) and give it a whirl! I’ve begun shooting videos for my instructional website twofingerbanjo.com, which will launch this spring. To see behind the scenes footage, exclusive content, and updates about the site, check out my Patreon page, where you can become a sustaining supporter of my efforts. Thanks!
In November 2019, I produced this single for Chicago musicians Max Allard & Otto Allard. I first met them while I was teaching at the Old Town School of Folk Music and they were students there. Over the past four years, I’ve been so impressed to see the musicians and people they’ve become. I was honored to work with them on this track, and to get to play guitar for it. We recorded at the aptly named Mighty Fine Productions in Denver, Colorado. Watch it on YouTube below, or stream it on Spotify, Apple Music, Google, or Amazon.
Here’s a free online fiddle lesson in which I teach one of my favorite square dances tunes, “Roscoe.” The video is just under 40 minutes long, and is probably best suited for intermediate students. If you can play a G major scale, have experience playing in the key of G, and don’t mind learning by ear, I think you’ll find this video helpful. Click here for the sheet music, which includes all the bowings I demonstrate in the video. If you have any questions about the tune, please feel free to send me a note directly through the Contact link, or leave a comment on the YouTube page.
