Folk Music of Pennsylvania"Matt Brown recently entertained us at our society's Spring Program. What an enjoyable, entertaining and informative evening of musical history we got! Thanks Matt!"
Joan Dehm, President Pennsylvania native Matt Brown has been performing American Roots Music since he was seven years old. Matt has established himself as a talented and entertaining musician, teacher, and performer who maintains an active touring schedule across the United States. Recently, Matt has combined his love of traditional music with the diverse and rich history of Pennsylvania into a new concert program, The Folk Music of Pennsylvania. The seeds of this program were sown several years ago when Matt researched music related to Pennsylvania's historical markers for his senior project at West Chester University. Matt says: "This is an exciting way to bring alive and make more personal some of the events and characters from our history. It gives a new perspective, and I have come to realize through this music that the issues and dilemmas we face today are not that far removed from those of our ancestors." The program includes a repertoire that ranges from lighthearted to heartrending. The Folk Music of Pennsylvania highlights events, people, and industries that shaped our communities, the state, and the nation. Topics include the Homestead Strike, the Johnstown Flood, the railroad, Conestoga wagons, coal mining, naval battles, and lumbering. Matt also pays tribute to Pennsylvania's own Stephen Foster, the iconic 19th Century American songwriter. Sprinkled in amongst the songs and their stories are instrumental numbers composed or collected in the state. Matt is offering The Folk Music of Pennsylvania as a flexible program that can easily suite a variety of formats. Matt has performed in concert halls, listening rooms, coffee houses, schools, libraries, retirement communities, and historical societies. School assemblies can be combined with workshops, class visits, and residencies. Contact Matt. A Sample of the RepertoireSongs:
