About Matt Brown, Musician

Matt Brown sings and plays fiddle, banjo and guitar. His mentors are some of the best musicians in old-time music, including Brad Leftwich, Rafe Stefanini, Bruce Molsky, Ginny Hawker, Tracy Schwarz, Paul Brown, Dirk Powell, and Bruce Greene. He has also been inspired by visits with venerable master musicians including Benton Flippen, Violet Hensley, Red Wilson, and Lester McCumbers. Matt has performed extensively as a soloist, as well as with Paul Brown, Rhythm in Shoes, Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, and Brittany Haas, and has appeared as a guest musician with Tim O'Brien and Uncle Earl. He has performed at The Kennedy Center, the Ozark Folk Center, the University of Kentucky, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.

In August 2011, as the beneficiary of a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation grant, Matt participated in a cultural exchange with La Bottine Souriante.s fiddler, David Boulanger, exploring the connections between southern Appalachian and Quebecois fiddle styles. The residency culminated in a performance in Grosses Roches, Quebec.

Matt has released four albums (click to store), including his latest, My Native Home, which is a mix of solo performances and collaborations with Tim O'Brien, Ben Krakauer, Brittany Haas, and Mark Schatz.
